The Story That Started it All

At the beginning of my career I reached a burnout breakdown. I remember this moment so clearly.  I was reaching into the cabinet at work to get supplies for my patient. It was 2PM on a Wednesday. I was feeling overwhelmed as I normally did. My co-worker must have noticed my troubled expression. She asked “Are you ok?” I so wasn’t. I began crying, feeling so helpless and exhausted.
I had recently started a new job that pushed the limits of my abilities both professionally and socially. Normally, that would be good. Even healthy. But I found myself in a work setting rife with dysfunction, stress, and a high level of unpredictability. It was a toxic work setting. After doing my best to advocate for a healthy work environment, I quickly moved from normal workplace stress to something much darker. I realized how much i dreaded Sunday nights. The thought of work made my heart race. I was frequently sick. I felt unable to compete effectively with the stressors I was facing. I had nothing to look forward to and experienced true burnout for the first time. The quality of my care began to diminish. I knew that was not fair to my patients, and in knew I need to change something, if not for my sake, then for theirs.
Beyond stressed, burnt out, and anxious, I needed help. I was only beginning my career but beginning to resent so many things. I started going to a therapist, was prescribed anxiety medication, tried my best at relaxation techniques to deal with all these problems in my life. Those things helped me manage physical symptoms temporarily, but I knew it was only masking the real problem which I wasn’t addressing. I didn’t know how to.
Dealing with these symptoms are not new to me. In high school and again in undergrad I experienced severe social and professional anxiety that affected every aspect of my life. Every thought. Every interaction.

I didn't have the proper resources to help me.

Needless to say, I quit the job that caused me these feeling. Sometimes that’s what it takes. Extrinsic factors carry as much affect intrinsic, but it wasn’t just the job, at least not entirely. It was me as well. Intrinsic factors I’d never developed that can help you cope, to be more resilient to these kind of stressors. It’s hard to admit that, but it was true. I needed to change my mindset and habits, as well as my surroundings.

Emboldened by admitting my shortcomings, I started to piece together ways of building resources from within and truly optimizing my habits, routines, mindset, ect to live a meaningful, satisfying life. I searched for evidence based research and statistics on workplace stress and how to manage it. Scoured the internet, every blog post and article I could find on anxiety. I spoke to other healthcare providers who’ve had the same experience with burnout as me. I pulled resources and models from my education as an OT to provide  insight, originally not realizing how helpful OT practices can be in these situations (it was right under my nose!). Having dealt with stress, anxiety, and burnout in more ways than I’d ever dreamed, I had a revelation.

If this happened to me, it must happen to countless others.
And if I can help myself, I can help others too.

About Joy Energy Time (JET)

I set out to construct the formula to help people develop the different layers required to achieve true work-life integration. To achieve a rich life. To achieve deep connections. To achieve the opposite of burnout, which is more joy, more energy, and more time. To gain back your life, both personally and professionally. That’s my personal mission, and my mission for you. Joy Energy Time was born! I realized…

The healthcare industry ranks shockingly low in employee satisfaction, and stress/burnout on the job.

Through my content, webinars, courses, and more, I can help you deal with these symptoms effectively with resources that I never had. All of my content is evidence based, from statistical research, stories and interviews from successful healthcare providers that have dealt with, are currently dealing with, or have helped others manage workplace stress, burnout, and anxiety.

But how can an Occupational Therapist help you ask?

Occupational therapists help people of all ages promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Pretty broad right? “Do you help people get jobs?” NOPE. OTs are trained as generalists that can take many paths, but far too often find themselves pigeon holed into physical rehabilitation settings, but their education and expertise goes far beyond the clinic. They can apply many principles and techniques to address mental health as well, such as cognitive behavioral techniques, sensory integration approaches, occupation-based interventions, and more! When it comes to burnout, stress, and anxiety, they have the tools to help.

OTs are bigger than just the rehab setting

Using my degree, background, and many years of research, I’ve created several online based courses that include didactic coursework, statistical relevance, interviews, self reflection, group discussion, and one-on-one life and occupational coaching. Individuals who take part in these courses and programs will learn ways to improve their work-life balance and work-life integration, effectively deal with stress, burnout, and anxiety related to their jobs in the healthcare industry by restoring the things that are most important in life.

Not a clinician? No worries! Our courses cover a broad range of topics including issues facing clinic managers, business owners, administrators, directors, and more! There’s a little something for everyone in the healthcare field.
